Post subject:  Sageretia Theezans assistance please?

Dear All,

I am somewhat new to this art so please excuse my ignorance.

I write in need of assistance with Sageretia Theezans (Chinese Bird Plum) that has recently been given to me following my return from Japan.

The tree was incredibly dehydrated when I received it 4 days ago. The leaves appeared in good health but the soil was the equivalent dampness of the Sahara. I've trawled through these forums for general advice and incorporated what I could.

I've listed below my recent actions;

1. Placed the tree in a bowl of water filled just above the lip of the pot and left it for 10mins. (This was 3 days ago)
2. It has been placed in a conservatory during the warm weather. The temperature is approx 15-22degC with regular circulation and a humidity tray. Though it has been moved around quite a lot prior to my reciept which may be a stress issue? (2 days ago)
3. The leaves have recently shrivelled and become crispy, of which it had been suggested to be removed. I have removed the majority. (1 day ago)
4. After applying Provado (1 day ago), the remaining leaves are showing signs of disease/insect damage. Black spots, chewed corners, holes in the centre of leaves, yellow leaves.
5. Today, in an attempt to try and encourage the tree to excel in it's natural surroundings, I have put it outside. It is dry, so I've placed the pot & tray and a further filled bowl of rainwater (filled just under the humidity tray). It is situated on the east side of our home. Current temp approx 19-20degC

On a separate note, I have noticed new shoots coming from the trunk, yet the sprowted leaves have shrivelled too.

I have also attached a link for the photographs for reference (I'm aware the soil does look saturated)

I've exhausted my imagination and research and I humbly write for advice from yourselves.

I look forward to hearing from you all.

Regards,

Satch.

HI Chris

Looks like the roots have suffered from the dry spell. You will need to give the tree a little time to recover. Too much attention to detail at this stage is just going to stress it even more. Put it outside, out of direct sunlight and let it get on with recovery.
It may help to put the whole tree into a large clear plastic bag (havin made sure the tree is properly watered), sealing the top of the bag (staples or a rubber band) and then putting it somewhere warm but not in direct sunshine. This will keep the humidity up around the whole tree and help to maintain the new shoots.

Hi Mike!

I didn't realise you was on here! - I didn't want to keep pestering you with phone calls!

It appears to be making progress. I've noticed a series of new shoots beginning to break through and the leaves, though pale, are starting to recover.

A couple of questions I do have;

1. What do I do with the tree when the weather turns bad? (Rain etc) - Do I move it back in the conservatory? Leave it out as long as the temp remains reasonable? cover it by building some form of glass type shelter?

2. Is it ok to cut some of the vertical branches and neaten it up a bit?

Regards,

Chris.

So long as the temperature stays above 15C, you can leave the tree safely outside. A bit of rain won't do any harm. I would hold off trimming until the tree has recovered.

Hi Mike!

Much like me, my tree is a stubborn bugger and refuses to give up.

I had noticed continuous wilting of the leaves, some of which have become yellow and showed signs of disease/pests. Discolouration, holes in leaves. The tree has been Provado'd once. Despite this, new green shoots are growing. Which confuses me? - It must be a sign of it getting healthier?

I've moved the tree to the only available window which is south facing with moderate light, moderately humid as it's next to a sink and has mild air circulation.

After 2 days, the leaves appear to be regaining colour. Fingers crossed!!
