Is it normal for a Cedar to shed it's needles? Mine has been shedding needles now for a couple of weeks. They haven't changed colour at all, but at this rate there will be no needles left soon. They all seem to be very loose if I run my hands through the foliage. I did some major wiring and pruning last autumn, but it has been left since then to recover.

Hi My Cedar has suffered the same and all the needles are off, but if you look close you can see the buds swelling. I asked a similar question of Greenwood and Corin suggested that they will grow back. Fingers crossed. Happyharry |

Thanks Happy. Yes, I can also see buds. I didn't realise that they lost their needles and this didn't happen last year. Hopefully they will grow back. |

Mine has also lost all its leafs, I think this maybe due to an over exuberant pruning session when I bought it though.

Mine's dropping for England. I Styled and repotted it in winter last year. Still healthy though so I'm not too worried (yet)! i'll post a pic when it buds out again. Lee |

Mine went from nice bright healthy needles to dull needles that were dropping by the ton in a couple of weeks. My cedar is now covered in new buds which are just starting to open. I bought my tree at the back end of last summer so this is the first spring I have had it so I didn't know what to expect. It gave me a good scare but seems to be as healthy as ever. |

The strange thing is that the needles look perfectly healthy and are still dropping (they are not going yellow or brown in colour). Is it best to let them fall naturally or gently run your fingers through the foliage to remove the loose ones? I am also mist spraying at present to try and nurse it back to health. |

Well, my Libani has given me cause for concern this season. I gave it a very hard prune back early in the season, around March, probably removing about 50% of the foliage and reducing most of the branches also. Bad idea.. It is now July and only just starting to show some green colouring up on several buds. It has only lost a few needles, but the other needles had taken on a duller hue, and did not look healthy. So far it has put on no new growth at all. The needles are now becoming a brighter green again and so I am hopeful for the tree making a recovery. It wasnt root pruned, being grown in a large bucket for the moment, and hasnt been given any wire training as yet, just a shaping by clipping. Two lessons I have learned from this experience would be: 1) Give some sort of winter protection to Libani. (Especially in a harsh winter like last). 2) Dont be too enthusiastic on the pruning in the early spring. |
